Synopsis

Literacy and Digital Competence in Teacher Education: Research, Curriculum, and Institutional Strategies for Future-Ready Educators examines literacy and digital competence as interconnected professional requirements for contemporary educators. It presents literacy as a broad capacity encompassing reading, writing, comprehension, academic reasoning, critical thinking, and the responsible evaluation of information, while digital competence is treated as the pedagogical, ethical, inclusive, and effective integration of technology into teaching and learning. Organized into four parts and fifteen chapters, the book progresses from conceptual foundations and professional standards to competency assessment, curriculum alignment, technology-enhanced instruction, faculty development, institutional support, and sustainable educational transformation.

Grounded in Philippine teacher-education realities, the discussion connects international frameworks such as DigCompEdu, TPACK, and the UNESCO ICT Competency Framework for Teachers with the Philippine Professional Standards for Teachers. It draws on two institutional studies conducted at Pangasinan State University concerning the literacy levels of education students and the ICT competence of language and literature teachers. These studies support the book’s emphasis on objective, domain-based assessment, integrated curriculum outcomes, targeted professional development, adequate technological resources, and evidence-based institutional planning. Intended for pre-service and in-service teachers, teacher educators, curriculum developers, researchers, administrators, and academic leaders, the book provides frameworks, assessment instruments, reflection activities, and implementation strategies for developing educators who are academically capable, digitally responsible, professionally adaptable, and prepared for changing educational environments.
